Goats Raising

Goat raising, just like sheep raising, is of little importance to the agricultural sector. Nevertheless, the small ruminants belong to the agricultural scenery.
Seven goat breeds are officially recognised and supported by the state. Today, there are just under 9,000 goat keepers, with a total of 60,000 animals. One hundred years ago, there were still 420,000 goats kept in Switzerland. The most common breed is the Saanen goat, which accounts for one fourth of the total stock. The chamois-coloured mountain goat comes in second and the Toggenburger goat third. Four out of five goats live in mountainous regions, and six out of ten live in the cantons of Bern, the Grisons and the Ticino.
