Fruit Cultivation
Swiss people eat an annual average of 56 kilograms of fresh fruits and berries, plus 27 kilograms of exotic fruits. Around one third of all fruit eaten is produced in Switzerland. Only about 40 per cent of the fruit picked is consumed fresh. 40 per cent is pressed into fruit juice and 20 per cent ends up in a distillery.
While standard trees were common in the old days, lower trees are now preferred as they facilitate work considerably.
In order to protect the countryside (bird protection) and to produce in an ecological manner, the state supports farmers keeping standard trees.
